Shortening of Time for Marriage in South Australia

A shortening of time is the formal process for marrying in less than one month after the NOIM is lodged.

It is possible in some cases, but it is not normal and it is never guaranteed.

First things first

Before a shortening can even be considered:

  • the NOIM needs to be lodged
  • the basic documents need to be available
  • the situation needs to fit one of the recognised categories

The recognised categories

The Marriage Regulations set out five categories:

  1. Employment-related or other travel commitments
  2. Wedding or celebration arrangements
  3. Medical reasons
  4. Legal proceedings
  5. Error in giving notice

Those are the official category names from the Regulations.

What we can and cannot do

We can:

  • help you understand the process
  • receive the NOIM
  • tell you what evidence may be relevant

We cannot:

  • approve the shortening ourselves
  • guarantee the outcome
  • make a weak case strong

Important reality check

Most couples are better off getting the NOIM in early rather than hoping for a shortening.

If you can solve the timing by acting now, that is almost always the safer path.

What to gather

If you think your case may qualify, gather proof early. That might include:

  • travel bookings
  • employer letters
  • medical letters
  • court documents
  • proof of arrangements already made

Best next step

  • lodge the NOIM first
  • read one month’s notice
  • contact us if you think the situation may genuinely fit one of the legal categories
