One Month's Notice for Marriage in Adelaide

Australian marriage law requires at least one calendar month’s notice before the marriage can happen.

That means the celebrant must receive the completed NOIM at least one month before the marriage date.

What starts the clock

The one-month period starts when the completed NOIM is given to the celebrant.

It does not start when:

  • you enquire
  • you pay
  • you start filling out the form
  • the NOIM is partly completed
  • the NOIM is witnessed but not yet lodged

Simple examples

  • If the celebrant receives the NOIM on 1 January, the earliest marriage date is 1 February.
  • If the celebrant receives the NOIM on 15 March, the earliest marriage date is 15 April.
  • If the celebrant receives the NOIM on 20 August, the earliest marriage date is 20 September.

Because the rule works in calendar months, edge dates can be tricky. If you are close to the line, ask before making firm plans.

Why this matters

Couples often think the booking secures the date first and the paperwork can come later.

That is not how this service works.

For us, the completed paperwork matters first. We can confirm the date, time, and place once the NOIM is received and we know what we have available.

What if one of us is overseas?

Being overseas does not remove the one-month rule. It just means you need to sort out signing, witnessing, and documents properly and early.

Read NOIM witnessing in Adelaide if that applies to you.

Can the one-month rule be shortened?

Sometimes.

A prescribed authority may approve a shortening of time if the situation fits one of the categories set out in the Marriage Regulations.
