Registry-style ceremonies by civil celebrants, not a government registry office. No fuss, no frills, no wedding. Just paperwork.

ID Requirements for Marriage in Adelaide

Before we can marry you, we need enough evidence to be satisfied about identity, date and place of birth, and any previous marriage or name change.

Proof of date and place of birth

Most couples use one of these:

  • a birth certificate
  • a current passport

If you use a birth certificate, you will usually also need current photo ID.

Photo ID

Current photo ID helps us confirm identity. In practice, this is often a driver’s licence or proof of age card.

If you were previously married

You will need evidence that the earlier marriage ended, usually:

  • a divorce order, or
  • a death certificate of the former spouse

If the divorce was overseas, extra checking may be needed.

If your name changed

If your current legal name is different from your birth certificate or passport, you may need:

  • a change of name certificate
  • a previous marriage certificate
  • other legal evidence showing the name link

If documents are not in English

You will usually need a translation. See translation requirements.

Practical tip

Get these documents together early. Missing ID or missing previous-marriage paperwork is one of the most common reasons things slow down.
